What's not working for me: Potty Training

TechieDadster and I have been working on potty training with SuperKid for what seems like forever. SuperKid mostly gets the pee-pee in the pot, but poop? Not so much. We are currently bribing him with a quarter everytime he poops in the pot. 4 quarters, and he can buy a new car. But, this does not seem to be motivating him to poop in the pot.

SuperKid is rather stubborn, not unlike my parents (eh hem). I really don't have any idea what I can do to motivate him to poop in the pot. Previously, we have tried cars and candy. I don't think a sticker chart will work, because I don't think he is thinking that far ahead.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me on potty training a 4-year-old SuperKid?

  1. I am in the same boat! My 4-year-old poops in his naptime or nighttime diaper. First we didn't care, but now that he's approaching his FIFTH BIRTHDAY (in June), we're, um, less than thrilled. For now, since we know he's likely to poop at naptime, we are making him sit on the potty for 5 minutes before his nap. No success yet (this has only been going on about 2 weeks). He gets a sticker on his chart for sitting the whole 5 minutes, but we've promised him a BIG PRIZE if he ever actually poops. Sorry I don't have a tip hat works. Good luck!!!

  2. At this point, I don't think he has decided that he wants to yet. Usually, once he decides to do something, he will do it, but pushing him to do something is like pushing a rope.

  3. My experience with five kids, four of them boys is that they will go when they are ready. That's been between 3.5 and 5.5, but it eventually happens. My current nearly 4yr old isn't much interested. I told him his last package of diapers will be purchased on his birthday and then he's in undies like it or not after that. It worked with two others, hoping it will work with him.
